The Vincent-Warren Library deserved better than a small, windowless room tucked away at the end of a corridor. As the country’s largest dance library, it deserved a space to match: open, bright and alive. A place where students would want to linger.

The challenge was real: a tight budget and a building that had originally been a parking garage. Not the most obvious place to create warmth. But sometimes constraints are what give a project its character.

By reclaiming recently vacated administrative rooms, the library’s floor area more than tripled at once. And the concrete ramp — a remnant of the old parking garage — became a raised platform. This gesture, almost nothing from a technical standpoint, changed everything: today it is the students’ favourite corner, a place to settle in, spend time and meet between classes.

Around it, the space organized itself naturally: work tables, a meeting room, a reception office and a multimedia room. There is also a flexible, welcoming lounge area that becomes a lecture space when needed.

A library that, in the end, resembles dance itself — carried by movement, momentum and a rediscovered lightness.
